Nutritional Yeast

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Nutritional yeast is something you’ll see pop up in a lot of Kitchen Skinny recipes. It’s a common ingredient in ‘vegan’ kitchens because it provides both nutrition and flavor.

Because of its nutty, cheesy flavor, nutritional yeast is a common cheese substitute. We encourage you to try it. It’s a great addition not only for its taste, but for its nutritional value.

Nutritional yeast is an excellent source of protein. It’s a complete protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids. Nutritional yeast is gluten free and is rich in vitamins, especial the B-complex vitamins. It’s also an excellent source of folic acid, which is important for formation, growth, and reproduction of red blood cells.

When you look for it, it’s a yellow powder similar in texture to cornmeal, and can be found in the bulk aisle of most natural food stores, such as Jimbo’s, Sprouts, etc. If you don’t have easy access to a natural food store, most of our recipes will not suffer greatly without it, but you may want to order some online so you can have it on hand for all of its benefits.
